You can completely avoid doing a certain activity within a quest and do the one you want to do to fill up the bar, OR you can do a little bit of everything. In GW2's heart quests, there's a bar that fills up when you do the quest activities, but there's usually multiple different activities that will fill it whether it's killing mobs or collecting or interacting with things, and you usually have a choice as to which ones you want to do. Traditional questing has you doing specific things a specific number of times. It does actually differ in a pretty big way, because it offers you more choice. I don't feel like i'm running errands for NPCs, without the ability to play with my friends.

There is also monster tagging, which is basically "everyone gets full credit, as long as you tag it" - which is huge for the mindset of players.Īll around, GW2 is an amazing "just go play and enjoy yourself" leveling experience. You don't get Heart rewards ofc, but the XP is still meaningful. And, even you're helping someone else complete a Heart that you've already done, the downscaling means the XP is meaningful still. Meaning you both can be rewarded by playing together.
The downscaling and un-done quests also mean that there is often quests that both you and a friend has not done in an area. In WS and many MMOs, once you're past the level range, that content is now entirely worthless to you. Lower level content that you did not complete is not worthless, it actually is very worth while to do for xp.
Quest order was non-existent, and because many zones overlap, you usually have stuff you can do with friends.įurthermore, zones are auto downscaled. You may feel a bit disconnected, but to me it feels freeing. Most Hearts have varying playstyles (kill, non violence, collect, etc) as well. Just go to an area of the map, and do stuff. Once completed, you get a chunk of xp/rewards/etc. If you're within one of these hearts (and you usually are), a handful of objectives are shown in your upper right, and you can complete them as you see fit. The engaging combat system and comic relief help ease the boredom.īasically there are "Hearts", which is an area of quests. A lot of traveling between NPCs, kill x mobs,etc. Unfortunately, it is old school when it comes to questing. Getting back to WildStar, the game has a good story if you read the flavor text and cubes, journals and other items you collect. You have your personal story to get some lore and it's very engaging. Also, the NPC you unlock after completing the heart and several around them do give you some story if you click on them, but it's purely optional. The NPCs around the hearts do talk and it does give you a bit of back story. The hearts essentially take the place of quests where the vast majority of players would click off the flavor text anyways. GW2 does a pretty good job balancing this. WoW has more than 2 decades worth of lore, but the game does a poor job telling the story. At least FFXIV has a great narrative so the traveling is worth it. I really disliked Spires of Arak, even though the zone itself looks great aesthetically. Like most MMOs, the majority of the NPCs are forgettable and some NPCs, while close to the target, still required you to navigate terrain that is a pain to deal with.
